Creative Flourishing in Poetry | A Four-Part Series
This is Part 4 of a Four-Part series. Written from the quiet comfort on a plane ride to Spain. I used to time to reflect on the four dimensions of Creative Flourishing, each poem exploring a different stage of the creative process.
Creativity is more than just making—it’s feeling, struggling, questioning, and evolving. It’s a journey that moves through chaos, doubt, clarity, and ultimately a feeling of freedom.

The Freedom
This is the moment we’ve been working toward—the release, the clarity, the freedom. After the chaos, the fall, and the muddle, we finally arrive at a place where creativity feels light again.
The Freedom is about stepping beyond fear, beyond hesitation, beyond the weight of expectation. It’s about trusting yourself, creating without restraint, and embracing the joy of self-expression.
At its core, creative flourishing is not about perfection—it’s about courage. The courage to be seen, to share, to create not for approval, but because it’s who you are.
If you’ve ever felt the weight of doubt, the fear of failure, or the pressure to meet impossible standards, this poem is a reminder that creativity thrives when we let go.
This is The Freedom.
Back at the start
As I child I would play
Not a care in the world
That’s what they say
But
As I get older
And wiser
A touch
It’s the caring muscle
I learn to adjust
I do care for the world
And a place I can be
To contribute
To add
Something from me
The real me
The one only I can see
All of me
Well most of me
At least
Some of me
Expressing my gifts
For the world to see
But caring is light here
It’s not night here
It’s bright here
Help will arise here
It’s a place you can see
See potential
See growth
See way more then most
Feel clear
Feel wise
With your eyes on a prize
A prize?
Of course
One true for you
Oh and
The twist in the plot
The truest torment
I nearly forgot
To be here, to really be here
Perfect is not
The yardstick
It will distract us
And detract from
We’ll retract in
Finding a way to feel safe from what
What is it really?
That’s for you to define
Not them
In fear of a person
That might come our way
They probably won’t
Well they may
And what if they do
Do they really care so much for you?
So adjust here
Be kind here
Be creatively wise here
With compassion
Not naive
Not people to please
Not pretence
Not made up
Not wanting to offend
But also not caring so much
That you douse the fire
That you cut the wire
That you prevent yourself
From soaring higher
Make things
Be seen here
It’s nice here right?
To feel free.

Reflections on The Freedom
It certainly is nice here. I’m grateful I’ve had some many wonderful experiences of living in the freedom of authentic creativity. However, knowing the other 3 dimensions, also makes me reflect on how I can shift my ways of being to spend more time here.
In my role as a coach and faciliator, that’s what it’s all about. Helping people to access their own world of creative flourishing, move through the chaos, the well and the muddle, into the freedom.
I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did writing them!
~ True creative freedom isn’t about ignoring fear—it’s about not letting it lead.
~ Perfection is a distraction. Expression is the goal.
~ The more we create freely, the more we truly flourish.
