Expanding My Facilitation Toolkit Through Play, Creativity & Connection
At the end of 2024, I lept into the world of LIFEbeat, many years after first hearing of their amazing work.
As a creative facilitator, innovator, and lifelong learner, I believe that growth happens at the edge of our comfort zones. Creativity has always been at the core of my work, but I know that staying creatively alive means continuously stretching, experimenting, and evolving. That’s why I jumped at the chance to train with LIFEbeat’s Creative Facilitation Course—a transformative deep-dive into the power of art, movement, music, and play to bring people together.
What I didn’t expect? How much it would reignite my own creative spark!

Who Are LIFEbeat? Why Does Their Work Matter?
LIFEbeat is an organisation dedicated to using the arts, creativity, and personal expression to empower individuals and communities. They believe that everyone has a unique creative voice, and their mission is to help people discover it—whether through storytelling, movement, music, poetry, or visual arts.
Their facilitation training is designed for people who want to lead with creativity, whether in workshops, classrooms, workplaces, or community spaces. It’s about more than just teaching—it’s about creating spaces where people feel safe, seen, and inspired to express themselves fully.
This instantly resonated with me. I know the magic of creative spaces, but I also know how tricky they can be to hold. I wanted to expand my facilitation toolkit, challenge myself in new areas, and see how I could weave more movement, music, and storytelling into my own workshops.
This wasn’t your standard sit-and-take-notes type of training. It was an immersive, high-energy, wildly creative experience that asked us to dive in fully, get messy, and trust the process.
Here’s a glimpse into some of the most powerful elements:
🎭 Playing with Improvisation & Spontaneity – Forget overthinking—we jumped straight into playful exercises that got us moving, laughing, and creating without hesitation. This was about trusting our instincts and embracing the unexpected.
🎨 Exploring Art as a Tool for Expression – From storytelling and poetry to music and movement, we experienced firsthand how different art forms can help people connect with themselves and each other.
🤝 Creating Brave & Inclusive Spaces – A huge part of facilitation is helping people feel safe enough to take creative risks. We learned how to set up spaces where people feel truly heard and valued—because creativity flourishes in trust, not fear.
✨ Stepping Into Discomfort & Growth – As someone from a design and crafting background, visual creativity has always felt natural. But singing? Movement? Improvisation? That’s a whole different world. This course pushed me into those edges—where the real magic of growth happens.
💬 Deep Reflection & Integration – After each session, we took time to process, share insights, and connect the dots between our experiences and our own facilitation styles. It wasn’t just about learning techniques—it was about embodying them.

Why This Training Came at the Perfect Time
I’ve spent years facilitating creative thinking, leadership, and innovation—but there’s always more to learn. And let’s be real—even facilitators need to be participants sometimes! I joined this training because:
1. I Wanted to Get Comfortable with Discomfort ~ Music, movement, and improvisation don’t come as naturally to me as visual creativity. If I want to integrate these tools into my own work, I need to experience them fully.
2. I Wanted to Refresh My Own Creative Energy ~ When you spend so much time guiding others, it’s easy to forget the joy of being on the other side of the process. This training reminded me of how powerful, playful, and transformative facilitation can be.
3. I Wanted to Connect with Other Creative Changemakers – The people you train with shape your experience. This group was full of passionate facilitators, educators, and creatives who believe in the power of the arts to create meaningful change.

Thank you LIFEbeat for reminding me…
- Growth Happens in the Stretch Zone
Feeling uncomfortable? That’s where the best learning happens. Whether it was singing in front of a group or improvising on the spot, I saw firsthand how leaning into discomfort is the key to creative expansion. - Facilitation Is About Holding Space – Not Just Leading
Sometimes the most powerful moments come not from leading, but from simply being present and letting the process unfold. Trusting the group’s creative intelligence was a game-changer. - Creativity Is a Muscle—The More You Use It, the Stronger It Gets
We all have creativity within us. This training helped me tap back into that wellspring, leaving me full of fresh ideas and new ways to engage participants. - Community Fuels Creativity
Creativity thrives in connection. The support, laughter, and shared experiences with fellow facilitators made this journey even more meaningful.
