In 2019, two years after the very first Creators Club event, my dear friend Jo sent me a WhatsApp message that read:
“No icebreaker project you ever come up with, ever again, will beat my crazy golf…”
And you know what? She’s probably right! 😂

To truly appreciate this moment, let’s rewind to January 2017, when Jo attended the very first Creators Club event. Back then, she hated the idea of icebreakers—seeing them as awkward, forced, and unnecessary. But something changed that day. She joined in, let her guard down, and realized what happens when you make icebreakers creatively fun.
From that moment on, Jo became—perhaps reluctantly—a quiet convert to the magical power of creative icebreakers.

Why Icebreakers Matter
We’ve all been there. You walk into an event, a workshop, or a team meeting, and someone says the dreaded words: “Let’s start with an icebreaker!” Cue the collective groan.
But here’s the thing: icebreakers don’t have to be boring, awkward, or cringeworthy. When done right, they break down barriers, spark genuine connection, and create a playful atmosphere that makes collaboration effortless.
At Creators Club, we’ve always taken a different approach—treating icebreakers as connection experiences rather than just exercises. And Jo’s Crazy Golf? That was next-level genius.
Leveling Up: Jo’s Ultimate Icebreaker
Fast forward two years later, and Jo wasn’t done yet. While teaching as a visiting lecturer at a Design School in Scotland, she took the crazy golf concept to a whole new level. This time, it wasn’t just an icebreaker—it was a week-long student project.
✅ People who had just met were suddenly teammates, laughing together.
✅ Creativity flowed as teams engineered absurd golf challenges.
✅ Barriers melted as the entire room got swept up in the shared experience of play.
This wasn’t just an icebreaker—it was a connection accelerator.

The ingenious part? This challenge encouraged students to experiment with different tools, resources, and machinery, pushing their creativity to the limit. They designed elaborate courses, engineered interactive features, and even added sound effects—so when the golf ball landed in the Loch Ness Monster’s mouth, it made a noise! 🦕🎶
I admire Jo’s creativity so much (and, of course, that of her students!).
It just goes to show what’s possible with creative icebreakers—they don’t just help people connect, they can also ignite innovation, teamwork, and hands-on learning.
Quietly, I felt like Jo was laying down the gauntlet for an epic reply. For now, I will humbly acknowledge her brilliance and take great pride in planting the seeds! 🌱😉

While Jo’s Crazy Golf may be hard to beat, there are a few key elements that make any icebreaker truly great:
1. Creativity – The more unexpected, the better. People don’t remember a generic “share one fun fact” activity, but they’ll remember building a ridiculous mini-golf course together.
2. Playfulness – Icebreakers work best when they create an environment where adults feel permission to play without fear of judgment.
3. Collaboration – The best icebreakers get people working together toward a shared (often silly) goal.
4. No Pressure – The key to a successful icebreaker is to make it optional, yet irresistible. When people want to join in, the magic happens naturally.
5. Be Resourceful – The context, location and resources available are likely to inform an appropriate ice-breaker, being outdoors and all the equipment on hand made this work perfectly! In other settings, something else will be better.
Jo’s Crazy Golf might still hold the title for the world’s greatest icebreaker, but that doesn’t mean the search is over! Every event is an opportunity to create new moments of unexpected connection and fun.
So, here’s my challenge to you: What’s the most fun, creative, or downright ridiculous icebreaker you’ve ever experienced?
