Creative Flourishing in Poetry | A Four-Part Series
Creativity is more than just making—it’s feeling, struggling, questioning, and evolving. It’s a journey that moves through chaos, doubt, clarity, and ultimately a feeling of freedom.
As I boarded a plane for a work trip earlier this year, I made a choice: instead of distracting myself, I would immerse in the moment, allowing poetry to guide me through the four dimensions of Creative Flourishing. Poetry has a way of uncovering more than I realise I’m thinking—rich in complexity, yet beautifully simple.
What followed was a series of reflections, each poem exploring a different stage of the creative process:
Part 1/4
The Chaos: When Creativity Feels Overwhelming
There’s something about the rush. The relentless energy of ideas, deadlines, and the need to keep up. I know it well. You probably do too. When creativity collides with pressure, it’s exhilarating—but also exhausting. The mind races, juggling expectations, responsibilities, and the ever-present need to prove something. To ourselves, to others. To keep up the momentum.
That’s where this poem was born. I was reflecting on one of those all-consuming phases—where everything moves fast, where my hands were full but my mind was fuller, where it felt like if I stopped, everything would fall apart. Instead of resisting the feeling, I leaned into it, let the words come, let the rhythm mirror the energy I was holding inside.
This is The Chaos.
There’s so much to do, so little time.
Intense emotions.
Fast.
Swirling.
Fighting.
Waiting for the day to end, the week to end, the break to come.
I hope.
I wait.
I’m all in a state.
Fury.
Quiet fury, trapped.
Hidden inside me so others don’t see.
But they can see , can’t they
They look.
They’ll see something.
I want them to see me…
Coping.
No
That’s not enough
See me succeeding.
See my strength
My achievements.
Not my emotions.
Never those.
Gulp.
Oh fuck
I’m feeling.
At least don’t see the fear, the anger, the built-up tension
The reality
The difficulty
The sweaty palms.
The racing heart.
The pressure.
It feels too much.
I glance, inwards
Just for a second
But my mind is fast
So fast
So much happens in that split second
I think I see it all
If I stop for too long I’ll admit to my myself it is too much.
Ok
Ok
Ok
So flip it then… what does that mean?
If it is too much?
Am I not enough?
If I can’t cope?
If I can’t get it all over the line?
If I can’t do more to help others, what will people think?
So I keep going
That’s strength, right?
I’m okay
It’s just a phase
It will pass.
It’s just a long phase.
I think
It will be worth it in the end.
It will unravel if I stop.
It will all go to shit.
I’ve worked too hard for this.
I breathe.
What if I listen?
How long will this last?
How long can I last?
The hiding pain
Sadness.
Guilt.
Concerns.
Am I enjoying this?
It’s all so fast
More coffee
More emails
More work
More speed
More spending
More saving
More success
Is that what I’m chasing?
To what end?
Until I get a badge?
A pay rise?
Hit a milestone?
Get recognition?
For what?
For what is the chaos for?
Push
Push
Push
See you tomorrow.
To grin and bear it.
Too tough to share it.
Too smart to show it.
Too afraid I hide it.
The Chaos, my pride denies it.

Reflections on The Chaos
Reading this back, I see so many unspoken truths. About how easy it is to get caught in the race. How easy it is to measure success by output rather than fulfilment. How often we keep going—not because we love the pace, but because we fear what might happen if we stop.
I know this cycle well. Maybe you do too?
If you’re in this phase—if you feel like you’re sprinting toward an undefined finish line, exhausted but unwilling to slow down—we can ask ourselves the hard questions.
~ What am I really chasing?
~ What happens if I stop?
~ Who am I doing this for?
Creativity is here to expand us, not consume us. Flourishing isn’t about more—it’s about depth, intention, and sustainability.
This is only the first part of the journey. The chaos can be very real—but it’s not the final destination.
What comes next?
The fall. The stillness. The Well.
