“I’m really sorry, but my hot chocolate isn’t actually hot… it’s barely warm.”

She didn’t roll her eyes. She didn’t act inconvenienced. She simply said:

“Oh, I’m sorry about that! Let me make you another one.”

Within a few minutes, I had a steaming hot drink in my hands. And we both had a laugh about how “hot” is kind of a crucial part of hot chocolate.

That’s when it hit me: Speaking up doesn’t have to be a negative experience.
