How Entrepreneurship Education Empowers Young People to Achieve Their Aspirations
For five years, alongside other projects, coaching, and training work, I facilitated enterprise programmes for Mynk—an innovative initiative designed to introduce entrepreneurship skills to young people aged 16–24. Through over twenty intensive, week-long projects, young participants journeyed from classrooms and youth-offending units to trading at vibrant London markets, gaining real-world skills and an authentic taste of entrepreneurship.

A Unique, Creative Journey—From Classroom to Marketplace
Each “Business Battle” programme was carefully structured to provide practical business experience, combining creative product development with skills such as market research, costing, pricing, marketing, sales techniques, and customer service. Participants received micro-loans to fund their ideas and then brought their creativity to life through products ranging from simple handmade doughnuts, seasonal drinks, and custom-printed bags, to more sophisticated offerings like multi-sensory books.
The incentive was powerful: the young people kept all the profits they earned, directly linking effort to reward, creativity to confidence, and aspiration to achievement.
Unlocking Potential and Challenging Expectations
Most of the participants were young people who had faced difficulties in traditional education settings or had been labelled challenging due to behavioural issues, misconduct, or criminal involvement. However, in this innovative, empowering environment, something remarkable happened: these same individuals flourished.
Over 90% of projects successfully repaid their micro-loans, proving that with trust, support, and opportunity, young people previously “written off” could achieve incredible things. Their creativity, determination, and entrepreneurial flair were genuinely inspiring, highlighting what can be accomplished when people are empowered to express themselves freely and creatively.
As one young entrepreneur shared:
“I decided to take on the enterprise challenge to develop my skills in business. I really underestimated the amount of planning that goes into making something as simple as a market stall successful—things like market research and identifying our unique selling point. I enjoyed scoping out the other traders to figure out costs, pricing, and tactics. I also picked up other skills like teamwork and enjoyed interacting with the public—it has all come together.”
Why Creative Flourishing Matters
My motivation for delivering these enterprise programmes comes from my personal experience. During my Design Degree, we had virtually no formal enterprise training—no guidance on costing, marketing, or selling the products we passionately created. Sadly, this gap still exists in many creative subjects today.
Imagine the possibilities if creative, entrepreneurial, and business education were integrated, encouraging collaboration between students from different disciplines. The potential for innovation, skill-building, and professional growth would be transformative, enabling creatives to flourish not just artistically, but also practically and commercially.
Lessons for a Creative, Empowered Life
Facilitating these programmes taught me valuable lessons about entrepreneurship—and life:The Power of Empowerment
- Great sales skills often trump perfect products:
Those who mastered customer engagement consistently stood out and achieved more. - Traditional education doesn’t suit everyone:
Young people thrive in supportive, practical environments that nurture their unique talents. - It takes a team effort:
Throughout the week, different team members shone at different moments—some focused meticulously on planning, others were resourceful problem-solvers, and some excelled at engaging strangers to generate sales opportunities. Recognising and leveraging each person’s creative strengths is vital for success.
Empowering On
Though Mynk has since refocused brilliantly on financial education, facilitating these enterprise programmes remains one of the most rewarding chapters of my professional journey. They perfectly illustrate the philosophy of Creative Flourishing: when young people are empowered, trusted, and inspired creatively, they don’t just grow—they thrive.
Let’s champion more opportunities for creative flourishing, where young people and aspiring entrepreneurs can express themselves freely, achieve their aspirations, and contribute positively to society.
