After six years of keeping this a secret, Jo and I have decided—it’s time to share a gift. 🎁
As freelancer buddies and creative collaborators for over a decade, we’ve ridden the highs and lows of work, running businesses, and navigating personal life side by side. But as our schedules got busier and we spent less quality time together, we wanted to make our catch-ups more meaningful—to go beyond small talk and get to the good stuff faster.
So, being two creatives who thrive on fun, reflection, and deep conversations, we came up with an idea:
The Tiny Newspaper was born.
What Is a Tiny Newspaper?

Simply put, it’s a miniature, hand-drawn newspaper—just a series of headlines and doodles capturing what’s been going on in our lives since we last caught up. No long essays, no filler—just the big stuff, condensed into a creative, punchy format.
✏️ On a personal level, it’s a powerful reflection tool—helping us process the last few months and make sense of our experiences.
✏️ On a relational level, it’s a conversation starter—cutting through small talk and unlocking real, meaningful discussions.
We don’t overthink it. We just create, share, and talk it out.
Why a Newspaper?
We could’ve called it anything—a bulletin, a zine, a journal—so why a newspaper? Because, done well, news headlines are punchy, playful, and to the point. And from a creative perspective, they open the door for:
🖊 Puns, wordplay, and humor
🎨 Fun sketches & doodles
💡 Sharpening our storytelling skills
And most importantly—headlines get straight to the point.
Why Not Just Talk?
Of course, we talk. But let’s be honest—unstructured conversations can easily drift into idle chit-chat. You know the type:
“How’s work?”
“Yeah, good. Busy.”
“Same. Anything new?”
“Not really.”
And suddenly, an hour has passed, the coffee is finished, and nothing truly meaningful has been shared.
The Tiny Newspaper helps us cut through the noise—helping us prioritise what’s actually important before we even start talking.

How to Make a Tiny Newspaper (It’s Simple!)
1. Fold Your Paper 📄
Take an A4 sheet of paper and fold it in half twice—creating a tiny A6, four-page newspaper.
2. Fill It With Headlines & Doodles! ✏️
Use coloured pens and keep it fun! No overthinking, no perfectionism—just brain dump the key things that have happened since your last catch-up. Think of it as a mini highlight reel of the last few months!
Topics might include:
~ Work highlights (or mishaps!)
~ New hobbies 🎨
~ DIY wins (or disasters!) 🔨
~ Fitness & wellbeing updates 🏃♂️
~ Dating, relationships, or parenting adventures ❤️
~ Funny or random life moments 😂
~ We love a sports page! 🎾
3. Share Your Stories
The act of visually presenting our lives in this way changes the dynamic completely—it opens the door to deeper conversations and makes catching up an intentional, meaningful experience.
☕️ Choose somewhere you can chat freely—coffee shop or parks are nice.
⏳ Give yourselves 15-20 minutes to create your newspapers.
🎙 Take turns sharing—unfolding the stories behind your headlines and doodles.
Why This Works Wonders
Over the years, the Tiny Newspaper has become more than just a fun exercise—it’s become a creative tradition. It keeps us connected, reflective, and engaged, even when life gets busy.
If you’re looking for a way to bring more creativity into your connections—whether with friends, collaborators, or even just for yourself—try it out. It’s amazing how something so simple can spark so much depth, laughter, and creative energy.
