Achieving the Impossible: A Real-Life Story of Passion, Persistence, and Serendipity
Yesterday, I heard an incredibly inspiring story that I knew I had to share.
It’s about Kate, a woman from East London who went from being a curious student to witnessing a NASA space launch—against all odds.
Her journey is proof that opportunities exist for those who dare to believe in them.
“As I tell you this story, keep in mind—I’m just a regular girl from East London. Amazing things don’t usually happen to me… or so I thought.”

“When I was at school, I applied to Cambridge University, and somehow, I got in. That moment changed everything. It made me realise that maybe I was capable of more than I believed. At university, I was studying genetics when I randomly attended a physics and astronomy seminar. Afterward, I spoke to one of the organizers—who just so happened to work for NASA.
NASA.
The astronaut people.
The kind of people you know are real, but don’t expect to meet in real life. (Like Father Christmas.)
As I excitedly jumped up and down like a child, he handed me a NASA pin badge, something he usually gave to kids during school visits.
I kept it. Not just as a souvenir—but as a symbol of possibility.
I stayed in touch. And, years later, that small moment changed my life.
The Unexpected Invitation
Fast forward four years.
I had become a journalist and radio presenter, but my fascination with space never left me.
Then, one day, I got an email:
“Would you like to be part of a media team documenting a SpaceX and NASA research project in Nevada?”
Of course, I said YES.
What was supposed to be a 10-day trip turned into four months, a life-changing experience, and an unexpected encounter with a legend: Buzz Aldrin.

The Journey to the Launchpad
I traveled to the 2011 Space Shuttle Discovery Mission, ready to report on the takeoff.
But then… delays happened.
Two weeks. Then another delay. And another.
I had planned for 10 days—not months—but I refused to leave.
I stayed in five shared houses, lived off my savings, and kept believing that I was meant to be there.
Then, at a press event, I met Buzz Aldrin himself.
And after sharing my story, he simply said:
“Stay.”
And so I did.
The Moment of a Lifetime
Eventually, after months of waiting, I found myself in one of the best possible viewing spots for the launch.
I stood in the control tower, just 3 miles from the launch pad, surrounded by astronauts, engineers, and even the husband of one of the astronauts on board.
And then, it happened.
The shuttle ignited the sky, taking off with an explosion of fire and energy.
I had done it.
A regular girl from East London had made it all the way to NASA.
And now? I still believe I can, and will, go to space myself.

5 Lessons from Kate’s Story on Achieving Impossible Things
1. Hold Onto Mementos That Keep the Dream Alive
That NASA pin badge wasn’t just a badge—it was a symbol of belief. Keeping reminders of our dreams helps us stay connected to them.
2. If You Believe It’s Possible, You’ll Make It Happen
Obstacles will come. Setbacks will happen. But persistence, resilience, and a little bit of cheeky optimism go a long way. People are more likely to help you when they see you are genuinely passionate and committed.
3. Sometimes, The Only Thing Holding You Back Is Your Own Mind
Kate once thought space was untouchable. Until she realised… it wasn’t. What seems impossible might just be something you haven’t explored deeply enough yet.
4. Surround Yourself With Like-Minded People
Kate shared five different houses with strangers-turned-friends because they all had one thing in common: a love for space. The people you surround yourself with can lift you up or hold you back. Choose wisely.
5. Share Your Dream—People Will Help You Make It Happen
Kate isn’t just dreaming about space—she’s actively documenting her journey and asking for support. When you declare your goals publicly, you invite unexpected opportunities and connections.
What’s Your ‘Impossible’ Dream?
Kate’s story isn’t just about space.
It’s about choosing to believe in something bigger than yourself.
🚀 What’s your dream?
🚀 What are you working toward?
🚀 What do you need help with to make it happen?
Because sometimes, the only thing stopping you… is not believing it’s possible.
